If you have enough luck or skills to find the first four The 69 Eyes’ albums, which can’t be found in CD shops out of Finland, you won’t be able to escape the impression how the band’s evolution is almost the same as the development of Gothic as music category.
First album “Bump’n'Grind” is positively loaded with punk energy and the same atmosphere continues on the second album “Motor City Resurrection”. On “Savage Garden” the band brings on the post-punk spirit, the evolutionary stage more known as “garage rock”.
“Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams” opens with the version of Blondie’s song “Call Me”, and mostly continues on the sound of the previous album with a component that makes the first serious band’s step into Gothic sounds.
More sophisticated Gothic sound perfectly balanced with hard rock is presented on the album “Wasting The Dawn”. After listening to that album, it won’t be hard for you to conclude that this is the album on which Jyrki decided to display all his vocal potential.
“Blessed Be” is no doubt Gothic in the lyrics, music, mood…in every element from the very first single.
“Paris Kills” brought somewhat less dark, but still evidently melancholic Gothic atmosphere and the sound perfectly completed with more piano particles than the previous albums.
Although in some elements they differ a little from the “Gothic mainstream”, The 69 Eyes are Gothic in their lyrics, music, appearance and philosophy…that’s something that nobody can dispute.
Album “Devils” introduced band’s new phase, maybe in a way less Gothic, more mainstream but again unmistakable in its expression. Listen to them and you will be convinced!
After “Devils” The 69 Eyes has released another antological piece called simply – “Angels” that even more opens the doors into the world of Skull Rock and resurrect listeners in the whole new wolrd – the world of rock’n'roll! The worls well known but again discovered fields of glam fock with powerful expreminets with pure Gothic Rock elements, voodoo sounds and extraordinrary strenght that comes out of every note.
Thereafter they, in 2003, released live DVD “Helsinki Vampires Live at Tavastia” filmed in the most known Finnish club form where in the beginning of the 1990′s started The 69 Eyes energy, there was a time also for a live album which happened in 2008 with the album “Hollywood Kills – Live at the Whiskey A Go Go”. This album is more then respectible presentation of what The 69 Eyes are on stage – pure rock’n'roll energy meshed by dark notes that will in songs “Betty Blue”, “Crashing High”, “Gothic Girl” or “Dance d’Amour” show also its gentle and romantic side.
In the end of 2008, The 69 Eyes released their, alerady antologic piece – “Goth-N-Roll” box-set which gathered their Goth side and on 3 CD’s + DVD treated fans with the most silver shine of the full moon.
2009 is a year for “Back In Blood”, the most complete bands album so far, but more words about it later…. For now, if you want blood, you’ve got it!
